Bassoon lessons
My youngest student is 6 years old. It is possible to start learning the bassoon on a smaller, scaled down instrument called the mini-bassoon. As the child grows and their hand span increases it is possible to move onto the slightly larger tenoroon instrument and then the full size bassoon.
Similarly it is of course possible to start learning the bassoon later on. I didn’t start till I was around 10 years old. Some students may not start till later in life. I am happy to discuss this further with you.
Piano lessons
I get asked this question a lot as the piano is a very popular instrument to start with! Year 2 (6/7 years old) upwards is a great age to start learning as your child can probably read words and small books by now. The ability to be able to read will support beginning to read music.
Yes, absolutely - no previous musical knowledge or experience is required!
Any and every child can learn to play an instrument; if a child learns and plays in a positive and encouraging environment, they will be able to develop their ability and enjoy music-making. I believe it isn’t about being 'naturally musical' or 'musically talented' it's about creating the opportunities, working hard and having fun.
Every family experiences their unique pressures and manages a hectic schedule. With dedication, focused practice can be included in the daily family routine.
Just as you devote time to helping your child to get dressed, eat meals, brush their teeth and read a book, you can find a regular short period each day for some bassoon/piano practice. Building a consistent routine allows for a smooth process for parent and child and positive attitude towards learning.
